Venus, Apollo, Ceres, the holy Virgin Mary, angels and saints. From the Holy Roman Empire until the Renaissance, these sacred figures have been endlessly carved out of white Carrara marble, also called ‘Luna marble’ by the Romans. It is therefore not surprising that this type of stone still embodies the kind of sacredness that it was once associated with.
During the Renaissance, Michelangelo even used to go to the Carrara quarries in person to excavate the purest white marble, called marmo statuario. Although you will rarely find this pure white marble in furniture, her sister with her smoky grey veins still arouses this sense of purity and sanctity.
