'Artona' coffee table in walnut wood by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for MaxAlto, 1970s

The Artona coffee table is part of a series designed by Afra & Tobia Scarpa in the 1970s, at a time when plastic and synthetic materials were becoming very popular. Instead of following that trend, the Scarpas chose to go back to natural materials and traditional craftsmanship.

Made from warm walnut wood, the design focuses on clean shapes and careful detailing. The way it’s constructed is clearly visible. Rather than hiding how it is made, the table subtly celebrates it, reflecting the Scarpas’ belief that material and technique should remain visible and honest. Produced by MaxAlto, the more craft-focused line of B&B Italia, the Artona series shows a different approach to design. One that values quality, materials, and timelessness over trends.

This coffee table is one of my favorite finds and I believe this will be such a timeless piece in your living room.
