sold / Memphis style 'Versace' table lamp by Jan des Bouvrie, 1980s
sold
Postmodernism is often referred to as a “memory” style, given its habit of inserting historical references into contemporary architecture and design. This ‘Versace’ lamp, designed by Jan des Bouvrie in the 1980s, is a true embodiment of what Postmodernism was considered to be. Its wiggling foot could not be more contemporary, literally citing the wavy motif that was frequently implemented by designers of the Memphis group, such as Ettore Sottsass. Complementary, its frosted glass shade is imprinted with the ancient Greek Meander pattern, which was cleverly appropriated by Gianni Versace, and is therefore nowadays often called the Versace pattern.
