Area 160 floor lamp by Mario Bellini for Artemide, 1974

The Area 160 floor lamp belongs to a series of table, floor and ceiling lamps designed by Mario Bellini for Artemide in 1974.

Mario Bellini designed the Area series not as a traditional object, but as an exploration of the very nature of light. Something elusive, ever-changing, and difficult to capture in a fixed form.

He wanted the lamp to be not an “object” in the conventional sense, but rather a gesture: an action or movement that gives shape to light itself. I think it also looks a bit like a flower and this lamp was on my wish list for a long time.
