When forces are not in equilibrium, a cantilever will fail. Already in the early 1920s Marcel Breuer (Bauhaus) aimed to tackle these obstacles when he was experimenting with tubular steel and the concept of the ‘freischwinger’ (cantilever), or chair without back legs.
In 1931 the Finnish designer Alvar Aalto then designed the first cantilever in birch plywood. Aalto’s chair became the precedent to many other plywood cantilever lounge chairs that followed, amongst which this German design with its bulky leather cushioning.
