Studio Ceres is a store / photo studio / prop rental service for vintage design furniture and decoration in The Hague, curated by Shari de Boer and Julie Hartkamp. As a photographer and art historian we go hand in hand, aiming to present you with the unique story of every object, put into words and into picture.
Ceres is an ancient goddess in Greek mythology. She is the goddess of everything that grows, everything that mother earth gives us. The unpredictable shapes of her fruits and plants inspire us. These shapes and lines are core to the atmospheres we want to convey and resonate in the outlines of the furniture we carefully select.
The collection consists of objects dating from the 1950s until 2000s. Space age plastic, Scandinavian wood and Italian glass: contradictions define our style. Our most important criterion is to only collect items we really love. Nowadays great names and iconic eye catchers often steal the show. With Studio Ceres we strive to bring revaluation to those lesser known pieces that have been forgotten about.
Uncovering stories of neglected designs and their designers is one of our main objectives. In order to do so we do not merely depart from our own collection. Research is an ongoing pursuit to keep on expanding our knowledge in this field, but also to do justice to those who have not received the credit that they deserved. In this we primarily strive to discuss female designers who have worked in the shadows of their male counterparts.
Photography is the primary medium through which we express our style. Our visual language is however fluid and follows the shapes and lines of our collection. Each new object that we find challenges us to reconsider the image that we want to convey. Along the way we also explore the possibilities of analogue photography and video.
Studio Ceres collects and sells. Do you have any pieces that you might think would be a good addition to our collection? Please do not hesitate to contact us!
Studio Ceres is a creative space that wants to share with and learn from other creatives in similar fields. We are open to any kind of collaboration.
